It's an honor to speak with you today. Why don't you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
I started as a morning radio host twenty years ago. It was my college girlfriend, who is now my wife (and podcast co-host!), who got me into radio. Since then, we have traveled from California to Kansas to Utah for my career. During this time, my wife and I found our passion for traveling. As we crossed dream destinations off our list while we visited them, it seemed to grow even faster with new port of calls. During the pandemic, we decided to start sharing our travel stories with our podcast, “Our Savings Starts Tomorrow”. Each episode is quick, only twenty minutes, and relives one of our trips with fun stories and travel tips. After the pandemic was over, we were surprised to see that our hobby had turned into some success! We just started season two and can’t wait to continue our adventures.
I'm sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
One of our biggest challenges was figuring out the right recording equipment! Sure, I’ve done radio for my career, but that was in the comfort of a studio with engineers. This time it was the two of us doing podcast research and trying to figure out how to get the best sound. We also knew that Instagram was going to be a big part of our marketing. Now our vacations have extra “picture time”, to make sure we’re capturing our travels for the gram. I’m not sure if our kids really love this part of it.
Let's talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
I may be the one with the radio career, but Jenn has quickly become the superstar of our podcast! She has a natural humor about her that listeners find charming. I’m jealous of how funny she is! There are a lot of travel podcasts but not everyone has the crazy stories that we have. Did you know that a person once tried to beat me up at Disney World on Mother’s Day? We’re still not sure why he charged at me! I’m just thankful that his friends tackled him, because my kids would have seen Dad get his butt whooped. We’ve also been in a hurricane on a cruise ship! What's your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
I think step one is determining what your definition of success is. Hopefully it is something that you’re passionate about. If you have a supportive team around you, then they will help you achieve those goals! I am thankful to have such a supportive family. Not a lot of people would have said radio was a good career choice! Even less would say that we should get into the podcast game. But thanks to their encouragement, it has worked out for us!
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
“Success” has changed a lot for me over the years. At the beginning it was to have a huge radio show in a large market where I made a bunch of money. This has changed after fifteen years of marriage and two kids! I hope that I can continue to have a career that I’m passionate about while making memories with my family. That’s the best part of doing this podcast, we’re all in it together. That being said, I’ll still take the million if you want to give it to me.
What's next for you?
Season 2 has started for “Our Savings Starts Tomorrow”! We’re recording an episode tomorrow about snorkeling with sea turtles in Maui. Travel restrictions have made some of our planned vacations for 2022 change, but that’s ok! We’re heading to Cancun in January and Universal Studios in March. We need to get to as many places as possible so we can continue to share our travel stories with you! Our podcast has reached Apple’s Top 50 downloaded in Travel & Leisure; I’d like to see it make Top 10 next year. Hopefully your readers can help with this goal.
